FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you don't find the answer to your question below, or elsewhere on this website, please email Pastor Cindi at  cindi.stewart@columbusfumc.com

Who can take Communion?
United Methodists believe in an Open Communion. You do not have to be a member of this church or of any church to share in the Lord’s Supper. There are no age restrictions as well, so children are welcome to partake. The style of administration of the elements varies by service and time of year. Full instructions will be given for receiving communion at each service. The elements used are bread and grape juice.

What about Baptism?
United Methodists believe in one baptism.  You do not need to be re-baptized to be a member. We recognize your baptism from whatever church you may have attended in the past. We baptize at any age. United Methodists baptize adult believers and we baptize infants. You may be baptized by sprinkling, emersion or pouring. We believe in baptism done in the presence of the congregation. It is a corporate act involving promises by God, the congregation and the person being baptized or the parents of the infant being baptized.

What is Confirmation?
In the United Methodist Church youth who have reached the age of accountability are invited to a time of study and reflection on what it means to be a Christian and then given the opportunity to confirm the promises made at their baptism by their parents and become full members of the church. This usually occurs during the Junior High years of the student.

What about divorce?
The United Methodist Church does not discriminate against those who have experienced a divorce in their lives. Divorced individuals and those remarried couples remain as full members with all rights and privileges as any other member.

How often do you change Pastors?
The United Methodist Church does not have a set rule about the moving of Pastors. The UMC is a Connectional Style Church and as such, each church and each Pastor is part of a larger organization that is connected in a way to provide ministry. First UMC is a member of the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church. We have a Bishop and Cabinet made up of eight members who determine the ministry needs of all United Methodist Churches in Nebraska and Kansas and determine which Pastor might serve those needs best. This is done on a yearly basis. Some Pastors may move after one year and others may stay for their entire career in one church.

What are Mission Shares?
The United Methodist Church has taken advantage of our Connectional System to provide support for ministry on a scale that no individual church could do. The name for this system is Mission Shares. Each church is assessed an amount based on membership and budget to financially support the United Methodist mission and ministry budget around the world. Our Mission Shares pay for colleges, hospitals, church administration, missionaries, and relief efforts in all corners of God’s creation.

How do I become a member?
Contact the Pastor and indicate your desire to become a full member. We recognize transfers from other United Methodist Churches, Other Denominations and Confessions of Faith for those who have never been church members before. A four week class is held on Sunday mornings in the Pastor’s office from 9:10 to 10:00 for those interested in becoming part of this church.

Who are the people reading Scriptures each week?
Any member of the church may take a leadership role in our worship service. We have a program called Partner’s in Faith that allows individuals to volunteer for many leadership roles, including lectors, greeters, ushers, communion helpers and many other positions. There is a sign up sheet in the narthex for those who would like to help with the worship service.
