Janet Hibbs Jones receives the NARSP Big Apple Award
 
Janet Hibbs Jones received the NARSP (Nebraska Association of Retired School Personnel) Big Apple Award at the State Convention of the Association on October 11th  in Grand Island.

 
 
Confirmation 2017
 
Confirmation was held at the 10:30 Service October 8th. These 17 youth were confirmed in the faith. Congratulations and blessings to our 9th graders: Hunter Gassmann and Madison Henderson, and to our 8th graders: Tadan Bell; Josalyn Valenzuela Bice; Austin Boswell; Hunter Colegrove; Owen Davis; Abigail Degn; Makiaya DeLaCruz; Trevor Fricke; Addison Heule; Hailey Hoffman; Rebecca Hoffman; Ericka Keep; Kyson Krepel; Brock Kuhlman and Tate Smith.

 
 
Veteran’s Day Presentation
 
Veterans Day is Saturday, November 11th and again this year we will have a presentation during our weekend worship services to remember our veterans. Souper Soup Day
 
On Thursday, November. 16, the Souper Soup tradition continues! There will be Homemade Turkey Noodle and/or Chili served with homemade pie, sandwiches (yes, there will be “church” cheese spread) and beverages served from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Take-out will be available in Chapel Parlor. In addition, check out the bake sale and quilt sale in the Gathering Area!

 
 
Dick Luebbe named to 2017 Islander Hall of Fame
 
Dick Luebbe (center) was named to the Islander Hall of Fame and recognized during halftime of the G.I. - Omaha North football game September 22nd.
 
 
 
Piece by Piece
 
“Piece by Piece” Capital Campaign/Our Capital Campaign Committee is pleased to share with you the details of our 2017-19 “Piece by Piece” Capital Campaign on the weekends of October 21 & 22 and October 27 & 28. The “Piece by Piece” Campaign addresses: 1) repair & restoration of stained glass windows; 2) retirement of debt on Outreach Center; and 3) establishment of two endowments that will address building & maintenance and expansion of missional giving. As we celebrate First UMC’s rich history, we also celebrate our current program of ministry as well as God’s VISION for the future of our Church. How is God calling us to share our gifts to make a difference to be “a center for Christian growth and outreach”? Craft and Vendor Fair
 
October 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at our Outreach Center
Do you have a craft or product to sell? We need you! Vendors and Crafters are welcome to set up  tables and sell their product. Table cost is $10 which includes a meal. The Youth mission team is asking for 10% of profits to help benefit their trip next summer to Ohio. Care Team needs a few more Caring People to serve in a variety of ways: provide transportation to & from worship on the weekends and/or to medical appointments; make hospital visits and/or visits to homebound members; help to coordinate health & wellness activities. COMMUNITY CONNECTION
 
 
Healthy Lifestyle Class – Session topics include: Carbohydrate counting, fat and calories, weight loss, importance of increasing physical activity, setting goals for success, and healthy snacks. Session is on October 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Columbus Wellness Center Multipurpose Room. The class is free to the public. To register call 402-564-4462 or go to www.columbushosp.org.
 
 
Chili Luncheon – Join us at Cottonwood Place for a Chili Luncheon.  It’s chili cook – off time!! On October 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Stop by and savor some delicious, homemade chili prepared by 5 Local competitors!! This is free to the public and we will have cornbread and cinnamon rolls. If you are not a fan of chili, then enjoy some chef prepared chicken noodle soup. 1st place prize is awarded. RSVP by October 24, call Amy Cooney at 402-276-9762.
 
 
Cottonwood Trick or Treat – Come trick or treat and dress for costume contest.  Plan to attend the costume contest for the following ages: Newborn- Preschool, k-8th grades, 8-12 Grades, all adults.  Great prizes will be awarded in each category!  RSVP to Sharon Ziegler by October 27 at 402-562-9136.
 
 
Creating a Discipleship Pathway – Join other churches from around the Great Plains conference in learning how to move from the membership model to a disciple making congregation. Dr. Phil Maynard, Director of Excellence in Ministry Coaching, will provide a day and a half workshop for churches of any size to begin thinking through and designing an individual discipleship system for implementation. Each church will leave with a discipleship system idea and a timeline to launch that idea. This Launch Pad will allow you to be on retreat with your pastor and your team to worship and work together on ideas to help disciples others for Jesus Christ back home. On November 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and November 4th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This worship will be held in two different locations as well as livestreamed for pastors and teams around the Great Plains. Columbus First UMC Outreach Center is one of the livestream locations! Cost is $10 per person (and includes Friday’s lunch).
 
 
E-Waste Event – On November 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Bring in your used or broken electronics to be recycled properly. Items accepted are: TV’s, computers, printers, scanners, phones, fax machines, VCS’s, radio equipment, etc. Charges for TV’s are 19 inch or smaller, $10; 20 inch or larger, $20. Columbus & Living Water Rescue Mission Celebration Banquet – Mark your calendars for November 6th located at American Legion, 2263 3rd Avenue. Seating starts at 6:00 p.m. with dinner starting at 6:30. Special music by The Wissman Family. One of the ways you may help the ministry is by sponsoring a table or tables for the banquets evening meals and cost. In this way all the evening’s offering from a sponsored table goes to the ministry. Individuals who sponsor a table will be recognized on our banquet programs. The cost to sponsor a table is $125, and you may sponsor as many tables as God puts on your heart. We need your RSVP! The evening meal and event are free due to the generous Table Sponsors. Your RSVP, however, is our way of getting a count for how many meals we will be serving. Please call 402563-1096 to RSVP.

Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirt -  A business group on Wayne State College campus is selling breast cancer shirts for $13. All of the proceeds go to American Cancer Society. If you would like a t-shirt please email Jayme Dubas at jayme22797@gmail.com. The T-Shirt says: the ribbon is pink but add some blue women get breast cancer & men do too!
 
 
Prairie Rivers District Mission Trip Opportunity – The people of Prairie Rivers have responded greatly to the hurricane relief through the building of flood buckets and monetary donations. Through your help those who have had their lives disrupted by the storms have experienced the love of God in their time of need. Many thanks for all you have done. Now your church has an opportunity to help further the relief by joining a Prairie Rivers District mission team. The Prairie Rivers District is forming a district wide missions team to go to Texas this coming January to help with the recovery work from Hurricane Harvey. Please join Pastors Russ Anderson and Martin Leeper January 28th – February 3rd. The exact location is yet to be determined. This mission opportunity is for laity and clergy alike. More information about this trip will be discussed at the Fall Update meeting, or call Pastor Russ at 308-382-1952, or Pastor Martin at 402-741-2362 for more information. The Prairie Rivers District will help with some of the expenses keeping the cost per person low. The expected cost per person is $200 (housing, food budget, fuel cost sharing, ect.). Volunteer in Mission (VIM) team training events will be held throughout the district for those wishing to join the mission team. Please look for information on when and where they will be held. An Early Response Team (ERT) training is set for November 18th at Central City Fairview, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. An ERT recertification training has been set for November 4th at Grand Island Trinity, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.  Registration for both is online at the conference website. Participants will need to be Safe Gathering certified.
